Superb book on Foxhunting in the form of Letters to a Friend from Peter Beckford, a clergyman, in 1881. There are twenty four letters and they are comprehensive covering every aspect of hunting, as well as being well written and a fascinating historical account.
These fox hunting letters are filled with advice, explanations and information, there are numerous black and white illustrations including one of the hunt kennels. There are accounts of how to feed hours, care for them and whelp the bitches.
The illustrations are charming, especially the one of the dog fox with a gleam in his eye. It's a beautiful book, hardback, red calfskin bound with gold blocking to spine and two motifs of foxes. The inside cover is in marbled paper and the top pages are gold blocked, all the pages are hand cut and run to 269.
The condition is excellent for age.
For game shots, wildfowl's, decoyers, stalkers and rough shooters alike, this book provides a wealth of material to fire their imagination and enhance their knowledge.

Two hardback volumes of this comprehensive work on Pheasants. It’s a beautiful set, written by William Beebe and signed by him. Published by Doubleday in 1931 in New York.
The two books have green buckram binding with gold blocking on front, they measure 71/2″ x 10″ with hand cut pages. There is a gold emblem of the Zoological Society on the front with a dinosaur and an eagle.
There are 257 pages in Volume I and 309 in Volume II which also has an Appendix and Index.
Both volumes are lavishly illustrated in colour. This study of living pheasants their natural environment in the Far East was undertaken by the author. A benefactor of the New York Zoological Society made it possible.
Nineteen groups of bird were documented and photographed and the author was presented with the National Academy of Science Award for his outstanding contribution to zoology.
The books are in good condition, clean and unmarked and are fascinating to read. The preface is by the President of the New York Zoological Society.
